The Celestron reTrace Deluxe GPS acquires satellite signals quickly, even under thick foliage. Basically it is a nifty little GPS device that if left turned on, plots your route on a LCD screen (about 1.8 inches) as a series of dotted (bread crumb trail) lines that shows the person's movement without an underlying map on the LCD screen. You can also navigate with the reTrace Deluxe by entering a starting location for navigation and then switching it off. Later when you decide to return to the starting location you simple turn it on and navigate by following a direction of travel arrow with the distance given to the original location. Most importantly, you do not need to be constantly moving to navigate back to the saved location. Most simple GPS's without maps or compass that leave a bread crumb trail require that you must be moving to active the navigation pointer on the device so that it will point to the waypoint that was recorded. The navigation for the Celestron reTrack Deluxe is excellent for returning to marked locations. The alkaline batteries will last for about seven hours with constant use. The built-in compass is accurate and the LCD light for night use is good but hastens the depletion of the battery.

The altitude and barometric pressure measurements are reasonably accurate when calibrated to a known altitude. The temperature measurement, however, is not very accurate. If you have Microsoft Window's software you can superimpose your route on a Google Map and also update the firmware by internet connection. The only negative aspect for me was the GPS is not Macintosh compatible. The software for this GPS is designed only for PC's running Microsoft Windows.

Considering the price it is a very good GPS in its class for navigation that hikers and hunters will appreciate. In some aspects it might even rival (smaller size, compass, altitude and barometric pressure measurements) some lower-end more expensive Garmin GPS's. It comes with a two year warranty.

Finally, the perfect handheld GPS. The addition of microSD cards to the eTrex line has made the ultra portable unit the perfect companion to carry with you on all your adventures - land, sea, or trail. Although the unit comes with a 64mb card, I purchased two 1gb cards. When you own a Garmin Mapsource product, you are allowed to use it on up to two units. I already own Recreational Lakes and Fishing Hotspots, as well as CitySelect which came with my Garmin GPS V Deluxe which I still use all the time locally in my Jeep and on one boat because of the mounting ability and NMEA output. The GPS V, however, is limited to 19mb and is now utilized in the regions I most frequent. Unlocking CitySelect for the eTrex Legend Cx was simple at the Garmin website. I would recommend first updating the software in the unit to the latest version, which is now just a few keystrokes with Garmin's Webupdater software downloaded from their site to handle the large capacity cards. On one card, I have Recreational Lakes East and CitySelect for the entire Northeast and MidAtlantic regions. On the other card I have the remainder of the US and Canada. The cards are smaller than the fingernail of your little finger. The eTrex Legend allows you to enable all or whichever Mapsource products you want. When not using it on the road, I disable the CitySelect to take full advantage of the Recreational Lakes software. If you do not own a mapsource product already, then purchase CityNavigator which I believe Garmin has updated the most for the points of interest and new roadways.

For my needs, the Legend series is ideal. If you climb mountains, ski in the wilderness, or are involved in search and rescue then the Vista series would be better because of the more accurate altimeter and compass.

I really like how easy the screen can be read in bright sunlight. The battery life has exceded my expectations, but always carry some spares and you should purchase a 12V adapter for use when a socket is available, especially if you want to turn up the screen brightness.

If all you want is a car navigator, then this is not the ideal unit. It is pretty much a handheld, although after some fiddling around I found the best way to mount it in a vehicle is with velcro. There is an available windshield bracket. The 60Cx and 76Cx may have better acquisition in canyons or under canopy in rainforests, but the smaller size of the eTrex series will allow you to carry it with you virtually everywhere.

The more I use it, the more I love it. Hope this was helpful.

4.0 out of 5 starsYou get what you pay forJanuary 10, 2008
This is my first time purchasing a hand held GPS system. I didn't want to spend a lot of money on a unit, and frankly I wasn't looking for a lot of bells and whistles. In retrospect, I am happy with my purchase, however I would not spend more money for the pricier Tritons.

When I first booted it up, I was a little disappointed with the base map which only included major highways. For my first test run, we took it for a drive in my friend's car. It tracked us very well, and the speed seemed spot on (judging by the speedometer). This morning, I took it out for a bike ride down to the beach. The unit fit easily in my bike jersey pocket and was able to get a signal for the 8 mile ride. When I got home, I exported the data to Google Earth, and the GPS path matched my actual path. I also checked the vertical profile for my trip which seemed accurate based on USGS maps for the area.

I have a few complaints about the unit. The compass is not 100% accurate. If I needed an accurate heading, I would use my old-fashioned compass. I also think the interface could have used some work to make it flow better. The included Vantage Point software could've been a little more robust, but it gets the job done. If I was expecting a top of the line GPS unit, I could have purchased a much more expensive unit. But for the simple things I was looking for, the Triton 500 works just fine.

5.0 out of 5 starsUseful and a fun toyNovember 24, 2005
Two months ago my family and I joined about 2.3 million others in leaving the Texas Gulf Coast as Hurricane Rita came our way. The road system could not handle that much traffic and a 3 hour drive turned into a 16 hour nightmare. Roads were clogged beyond capacity and I used a county map to navigate along back roads (gravel, shell, dirt and cowpath) to get ahead of a few thousand cars stopped on highways. That worked fine until the map ran out. Then we were stuck in traffic and melting heat. As we sat there I saw other people using nearby roads with confidence and I assumed they had better maps than I did. I was right, but their maps were on their GPS devices. The decision to buy a GPS was made then and there.

I did a lot of research trying to decide which device I wanted to buy and soon found myself lost in a sea of varying opinions. Right after reading a review that extolled the virtues of one unit I would read another that completely trashed it. Eventually I decided that the reviews here and at other sites were not going to give me the answer I was looking for and I would have to buy a device and try it for myself. Using reviews and some common sense I decided that the Garmin eTrex Legend C was a good bet for a trial and ordered it from Amazon.

After giving it a real workout this last week I have to report that this device is a dream. When I chose the Legend C it was my intention that be our introduction into GPS navigation on road and off as well as to use for Geocaching.

We began using it the day we got it by entering an address and navigating to a friend's house on the other side of town. What amazed me was that it chose the same route I would have used, (from among several that were not as desireable). A few days later we used it on a 300 mile trip and it performed flawlessly. It even found our destination, a place in the middle of nowhere, past the end of the last marked road and in a pasture accessible only by a ranch road with no name (that was on the map I downloaded into the device from Garmin City Select Map CD). We used it in the field for several days and my son played with it almost constantly. Before we left to return home we used it to find our first geocache.

The Pros - Great battery life. I do recommend the 12 volt car power cable option because the backlight times out to conserve battery life. We used it for a week (kids sat there and played with it for hours trying to discover all of the features) and it's still on the first set of batteries.

- Easy to read display. Like most other color displays it washes out a little when direct sun is shining on it, but unlike the color display on my cellular telephone it only takes a small adjustment in angle to see the readout well. The display is sharp and automatically changes at dusk and dawn to make itself easier to view in different light conditions.

- Amazingly accurate. When navigating, the device provides warning of upcoming turns by beeping and changing the display. As you get closer to the turn it displays a countdown to the number of seconds before the turn. We were astounded by how accurately it marked the turns to the second.

- Quality of optional maps from the City Select CD. We were out in rough country where even the marked county roads are unpaved and barely maintained. The number of no-name ranch roads scraped out by graders, or are trails marked only by the track of other vehicles that use it, are how people get around once off the highway. Other than some of the smaller tracks this map found every gravel or shell private road we came across. We even found some roads that we had not known existed before as we saw them on the map display while driving around.

Ability to maintain contact with satellites. If you plan to use this in the car I recommend that you turn it on outside the car first and let it find the satellites. It seems to work faster that way. However, while it may take longer for the Legend to find the satellites from inside a vehicle, no matter how it finds them once it acquires the satellite signals it hangs on to them from inside the car. The only way we ever got it to completely lose the signals was to hold it down well below the line of sight from any window. I purchased the optional vehicle mount that suction cups to the windshield and I always had a great signal. Outside, under medium cover, it held signals without a problem. I did not have major cover to deal with so I can't say what would happen in a forest. I expect that the Legend would have the same problems as any GPS would when used under a heavy canopy of trees.

Cons - The device uses a small pointer button to maneuver through options on many of the menus. When trying to manipulate the pointer and then press it to enter an option, it is easy to make mistakes and make the cursor move when you meant to press "enter". A minor hassle but one you should be aware of.

The display is small for use as in vehicles. I could read it allright, but if I were using the device only for in car navigation I would a larger readout. But, as I said I chose this unit to perform a variety of GPS jobs.

Pro and Con - The maps from the CD were fantastic. I have yet to find an error. The "unlocking" process was not as much a pain as I expected from reading other reviews, but it was not as user friendly as I would like.

Maps are loaded by sections and urban areas really eat up a lot of memory. My next unit will have more memory or an expansion slot to add memory via SD or CF cards.

Final analysis. If you are looking for a GPS device to perform a wide variety of tasks on and off road then I highly recommend the eTrex Legend C. As an entry level unit it is expensive, but the cheaper devices had limitations that I was not prepared to live with. More expensive units offer more memory and other things that are nice to have, and of course you can find devices that are more specifically designed and useful for more narrowly focused applications.

4.0 out of 5 starsInexpensive geocaching starter!October 25, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase
Pros: Inexpensive, paperless geocaching, and after you read directions very simple to use. I have dropped it several times and use it in very very harsh conditions (sand, rain, wind, heat) and it hasnt skipped a beat. It is absolutely durable. Also, I personally love that I can set up searches on geocaching.com and it uploads all geocaches within my search with ease. Excellent starter unit! I am actually purchasing another one for my sister and her family to start geocaching!

Cons: I dislike that the compass doesnt work until you move, the screen is very small, base map cant be upgraded, and it is hard to see in the sunlight.

Overall, we are very happy with the purchase of this item. We will be replacing it within a year to a more advanced geocaching unit, but for a starter geocaching gps it is absolutely perfect.

Amazon.com Review

Garmin's eTrex Vista GPS receiver is smaller than its popular eMaps, but far more powerful. The Vista offers more memory, more features, and more convenience than any other GPS hardware in this price range.

Don't be fooled by the product's small screen. Although smaller than the display used in products like the eMap, it has a higher resolution, letting it show more information more crisply. Small text can be difficult to read from a distance, but there are "big number" options available to make important data like your speed easy to read.

It's this configurability that makes the eTrex Vista so special.

Map page (shown with optional MapSource topo detail).
You can easily set it up to suit your needs, regardless of the situation. Menu choices are highlighted and confirmed with a small joystick near the top of the unit, providing an elegant interface for navigating a formidable amount of options. Our only complaint is that the joystick used to access all the product's features is offset to the left, making it nearly impossible to control using only your right hand. When the joystick is held in your left hand, however, every control is within easy reach of your left thumb, freeing your right hand to hold a flashlight, walking stick, lantern, or anything else.

This GPS unit's diminutive size and weight, not to mention its rugged design, make it an ideal hiking companion. It's waterproof in up to 3 feet of water for 30 minutes and is generously coated with shock-absorbing rubber. The barometric altimeter keeps a historical record of your ascents and descents, graphing elevation changes so you can easily track your progress.

The ability to store waypoints, points of interest, routes, and other information means you can blaze your own trail and always find your way back to camp.

Best of all, 24 MB of internal memory makes it possible to store an enormous amount of data from Garmin's optional MapSource CDs, turning the eTrex Vista into an interactive road atlas. The memory isn't expandable, but 24 MB is enough to store street-level data for entire states in some cases.

A serial cable is included for transferring the maps from your PC to the GPS unit, but it's terribly slow. A USB connector, sold separately, transfers data in a fraction of the time.

The eTrex Vista was very accurate in testing, especially in a car on the open road. Accuracy diminished somewhat when the device was used in heavy tree cover or a dense urban area, but not enough that you're ever going to get lost or miss an exit. Used side-by-side with an eMap, the eTrex Vista kept up in update speed while displaying even more information on the moving map than the eMap did, cementing its position as perhaps the best all-around handheld GPS unit money can buy. --T. I bought the Meridian Platinum and the Garmin Vista to do a technical comparison. They are both great units with similar price and features. I also tested the next level down: Meridian Gold and the Garmin Legend with similar results. Here's my take:

If small size and high resolution are important to you, buy the Garmin.

If you prefer a larger screen, larger buttons, a floating unit, or something that can be viewed beyond an armslength away, get the Magellan. If you require reading glasses, avoid the Garmin.

Here is a list of specific comments:
- Size: Garmin fits easily in a shirt pocket. Magellan is 114% larger by volume and is better suited for a fanny pack or large coat pocket.
- Weight: Magellan is 51% heavier.
- Display: Magellan display is 66% larger, viewable beyond an arm's length. Garmin not viewable beyond an arm's length.
- Pixels: Garmin has over twice as many pixels.
- Resolution: With the smaller display and higher pixel count, the Garmin screen resolution is about four times greater.
- Both are waterproof. Magellan floats...Garmin doesn't.
- Reception: Magellan had slightly better reception, probably due to larger internal antenna.
- Screen protection: Magellan has a raised frame around display to help prevent scratches, but it also collects lots of dust on the screen as a result.
- Maps/waypoints: Low resolution for the Magellan made small map features difficult to discern. Garmin much easier to read with a large variety of highly detailed map symbols/icons.
- Features: Similar for both, but the Magellan had a few extras I liked: audible alerts for turns, a "windshield" navigation view with waypoints drawn in the "distance", a "speedometer" view with dial, sun and moon location displayed on the compass dial.
- Buttons/knobs: Garmin's buttons are all on the sides and are very small. You won't be able to operate them with gloves. I like the little joystick for the left thumb very much, but folks with clumsy hands will not. Magellan's buttons are large, easy, and labelled.
- Magnetic compass: Garmin must be held flat for this feature. Magellan's compass works in any position. (With motion, separate heading indicator works at any orientation on both units.)
- Battery life and accuracy: About the same for both.
- PC cable/DC car adapter: Garmin slides onto the back. Magellan has an awkward screw-in device.
- Mapping Memory: Garmin has 24 MB ready for upload from mapping software (sold separately). Magellan requires additional memory card...
- Owner's Manual: Garmin provides complete owner's manual. Magellan only provides a quick-start manual. Complete manual is electronic and divided into two files.
- User interface: I found the Garmin software and menus to be slightly more intuitive.

Result: I wanted a small unit for outdoor activities and occasional automobile travel. I like small, high-precision devices with lots of detail. I kept the Garmin.

I also ordered the car dash mount, DC auto adapter, belt carry case, and MapSource MetroGuide USA CD. I have been very pleased with each of them.
